The International Women's Day is being observed in the country, as elsewhere across the globe, on Friday, with focus on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

This year’s theme is 'Think equal, build smart, innovate for change'.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called upon all to support women and girls who are breaking down barriers to create a better world for everyone.

“Let’s make sure women and girls can shape the policies, services and infrastructure that impact all our lives,” he said in a message marking the International Women’s Day.

In her statement on the International Women’s Day, UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka calls to put innovation at the centre of efforts to reflect the needs and viewpoints of women and girls and to resolve barriers to public services and opportunities.

Different organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes, including rallies, discussions and cultural events, to mark the day.

Marking the day, the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs has arranged a discussion at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre at 9am on March 9. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is likely to attend it as the chief guest.

Five women will be honoured with ‘Joyeeta Award’.

Products produced and manufactured by women entrepreneurs will be displayed in the district towns from March 8-9.

On the eve of the day, President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages, greeting all women across the world.

Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and all other private television channels will air special programmes while newspapers will publish supplements highlighting the significance of the day.
