Bangladesh hockey team made a winning start to their Asian Games campaign, beating their recent-time rivals Oman 2-1 at the GBK hockey field in Jakarta today.

Arshad Hossain gave Bangladesh the lead through a field goal in the 14th minute, but Oman hit back nine minutes later from a penalty corner. Bangladesh regained the lead four minutes later when Ashraful Islam converted a penalty corner.

Bangladesh dominated the opposition but failed to increase the lead in the next two quarters.

This win makes Bangladesh's chances of finishing at least sixth bright as they will take on higher-ranked Malaysia, Pakistan as well as minnows Thailand and Kazakhstan in the remaining group matches.

Bangladesh had finished eighth in the last Asian Games, losing their place-deciding match against Oman.
