Stand-in Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah’s first Test hundred since 2010 has set up a declaration at 224/6 on day two of the  second Test in Dhaka on Wednesday, setting Zimbabwe a target of 443 to win the match and the series.

Bangladesh, who opted against enforcing the follow-on despite their 218-run first innings lead, had been rocked in the morning session as Kyle Jarvis and Donald Tiripano took two wickets each. But from 25/4, the hosts found resistance from Mahmudullah and the debutant Mohammad Mithun, who made 67 in a stand worth 118.

Mahmudullah lost Mithun and Ariful Haque but progressed to his second Test century – and first since he made 115 in New Zealand eight years ago – and declared the innings on the stroke of tea.

Zimbabwe, who were all out for 304 on the third day after Bangladesh stormed to 522/7 declared, made a strong start to the fourth morning. Imrul Kayes was the first to go, slashing a wide ball from Jarvis  to the fielder station at deep backward point in the fifth over of the day. Two balls later, Jarvis slanted one past Liton Das to hit off stump and Bangladesh were 10/2.

A third wicket fell without a run added as Mominul Haque chased one from Tiripano and edged to Regis Chakabva, and when Mushfiqur Rahim swatted the same bowler to deep square leg, Bangladesh were four down in 12.1 overs.

Mithun and Mahmudullah prevented further damage, slowly building their partnership to take Bangladesh’s lead past 300 before the captain marched to 101*.

Bangladesh need a win to square the series after going down by 151 runs in the first Test.

Tea: Bangladesh 522/7 dec & 226/4 (Mahmudullah 101*, Mithun 67) lead Zimbabwe 304 by 442 runs
