Taijul beat Shakib in race to fastest 100 wickets

It was a matter of one wicket only and the wicket came in the 13th over of Afghanistan’s first innings at spin-friendly Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium in Chattogram on Thursday.

Left-arm orthodox Taijul Islam picked up his 100th Test wicket in the 25th match, clearing the stumps of Afghan opener Ihsanullah Janat and became the fastest and third Bangladeshi bowler to achieve the feat.

Tijul debuted in Kingston Test against West Indies on 5 September 2014.

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was the earlier holder of Bangladesh’s record of fastest to 100 wickets. He picked up the wicket in 28th Test match in 2012.

Another left-arm orthodox Mohammad Rafiq was the first Bangladeshi cricketer to pick up 100 wickets in 33 tests, played in eight years (2000-2008).

Currently, Shakib Al Hasan has most Test wickets as a Bangladeshi cricketer. He has picked up 205 wickets in 55 tests so far.

There is one thing similar among the three top Test wicket takers of Bangladesh, all of them are left-arm orthodox.

Overall, George Lohmann of England holds the record of fastest to 100 Test wickets in 16 matches. He achieved the feat in a match against South Africa in Johannesburg on 2 March 1896.

Muralitharan of Sri Lanka has picked up 800 wickets, the most in tests.
