Germany's top clubs managed to avoid each other mainly in the German Cup on Sunday, the last 16 draw with just two all-Bundesliga ties in Schalke away to Wolfsburg and Moenchengladbach hosting Stuttgart.
Should European Champions and German Cup holders Bayern Munich defeat Holstein Kiel in their second-round clash, postponed until 13 January, on 2 or 3 February in Darmstadt, they will meet another second division team.
Similarly, on January 12, the winner of Bayer Leverkusen against Eintracht Frankfurt, also postponed since December, is off to Rot-Weiss Essen, the only remaining fourth-tier side.
Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have both formed second division clubs in Paderborn and Bochum.
The quarter-finals are expected to take place in early March, with the Berlin Olympic Stadium finals scheduled for 13 May.
