The World Food Day (WFD) is being observed in the country as elsewhere in the globe on Tuesday.

This year’s theme is “Our Actions are our Future. A #ZeroHunger world by 2030 is possible.”

After a period of decline, world hunger is on the rise again. Currently, over 815 million people were suffering chronic undernourishment, according to the latest reports of Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Conflict, extreme weather events linked to climate change, economic slowdown and rapidly increasing overweight and obesity levels are reversing progress made in the fight against hunger and malnutrition, according to the United Nations System Standing Committee.

Now is the time to get back on track. The world can achieve Zero Hunger if we join forces across nations, continents, sectors and professions, and act on evidence, UNSSC said.

Zero Hunger moves beyond conflict-resolution and economic growth, taking the long-term approach to build peaceful, inclusive societies.

The World Food Day is a chance to show our commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 – to end hunger and malnutrition.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in issued separate messages wishing for overall success of the Day.

World Food Day is celebrated every October 16 to mark the founding of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation in 1945.

Organisations in 150 countries hold events meant to “promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all.”
