An Indian North Goa man was arrested on Friday for allegedly murdering his sick wife by burying her alive on a construction site of a Panaji police irrigation canal said.

Tukaram Shetgaonkar, 46, was arrested by police on Thursday for allegedly burying his ailing wife Tanvi, 44, alive at the Tillari irrigation project construction site in Narvem village, an official said.

Some labourers rescued the body of the woman, even as the accused tried to stop them from working on the site, where on Wednesday he had buried the deceased.

According to the official, the suspect, who made a living doing odd jobs, killed his wife because he could not afford her medical expenses.

Police also filed a complaint against the suspect under the Indian Penal Code sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing the destruction of evidence of offence), he added.
