In 24 hours France reported nearly 10,000 new cases of coronavirus, marking the highest single-day count since the outbreak began.

Health authorities on Thursday reported 9,843 new confirmed Covid-19 cases, surpassing nearly 900 of the previous daily record.

The statistics regarding toughening steps were published on the eve of a crucial meeting of ministers and health experts.

France has the world's 7th-highest death toll for Covid-19.

More than 30.800 people have died from coronavirus in the world.

In recent days the number of patients in the country's intensive care units has also risen, BBC said.

At Friday's meeting officials will be debating implementing new steps to prevent the spread of the virus.

President Emmanuel Macron said the meeting would provide the public with a good picture of what can be expected in the weeks to come.
