In a win for President Donald Trump a week before the general election, the US Senate confirmed Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.

Trump's fellow Republicans voted 52-48 to support the judge, overcoming the Democrats' unified opposition.

The 48-year-old took the oath of office alongside President Trump at the White House.

Her nomination seals a 6-3 Conservative majority in the highest US judicial body for the near future.

Just one Republican, Senator Susan Collins, facing a difficult Maine re-election battle, voted against the president's candidate in a vote on Monday night, the BBC said.

The latest justice is the third, after Neil Gorsuch in 2017 and Brett Kavanaugh in 2018, named by the Republican president.

Indiana's federal appeals court judge fills the void left by a liberal icon who died last month, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
