From Monday morning, the UK will close all travel corridors to "protect against the risk of as yet unidentified new strains" the PM said.

Before taking off, anyone flying into the nation from abroad would have to demonstrate evidence of a negative Covid test.

It comes as a ban came into effect on Friday on travelers from South America and Portugal over fears about a new variant found in Brazil.

Boris Johnson said that, until at least 15 February, the new rules will be in effect.

In the UK, a further 1,280 individuals with coronavirus died within 28 days of a positive test, raising the number to 87,291.
