7.0-magnitude earthquake near Chilean Antarctic base: officials

On Saturday, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit off the Antarctic coast, with authorities issuing a tsunami warning to researchers at the Eduardo Frei base in Chile on the cold continent, emergency officials said.

The earthquake struck at 8:36 pm (2336 GMT) approximately 210 kilometers (130 miles) east of the Eduardo Frei base at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), according to the Chilean National Emergency Office, calling for evacuation from the 'Antarctic beach area' before a potential tsunami.
