Calcutta High Court judge Justice CS Karnan was today sentenced to six months jail by Indian Supreme Court, which held him guilty of contempt and ordered the Kolkata police chief to arrest him.

This is the first time that a sitting judge has been sentenced to prison.

Yesterday, the controversial Calcutta High Court judge had "sentenced" the Chief Justice of India and seven judges of the Supreme Court to five years in jail.

In an escalation of his confrontation with the Supreme Court, Justice Karnan said the eight judges have "jointly committed the offences punishable under the SC/ST Atrocities Act of 1989 and amended Act of 2015", reports the Times of India.

Karnan named members of the apex court's seven-judge bench, comprising the Chief Justice of India, Justices Dipak Misra, J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B Lokur, Pinaki Chandra Ghose and Kurian Joseph.

The bench had initiated suo moto (on its own) contempt proceedings against Justice Karnan and had restrained him from performing judicial and administrative work.
