Chief justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, who is now on a month-long leave, has reportedly written a letter to the president, Abdul Hamid, apprising him that he is going abroad.

Law minister Anisul Huq said he has come to know from the secretary of his ministry about the letter of the chief justice.

“When we go abroad, we need to obtain a GO [government order]. In the same manner, the chief justice needs to obtain a GO as well. I’ve heard that he sent a letter seeking GO,” said the law minister.

A law ministry official said the chief justice in his letter stated he would stay abroad from 13 October to 10 November.

Earlier on 2 October, law and parliamentary affairs minister Anisul Huq said chief justice SK Sinha applied for one month’s leave on health grounds.

But the Supreme Court Bar Association and opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have alleged that the government has sent the chief justice on forced leave.

The chief justice, Surendra Kumar Sinha, apparently strained his relations with the ruling leadership including the prime minister and the law minister through the 16th amendment annulment verdict which scrapped parliament’s power to sack judges.

Rumours in the political arena have it that the government is forcibly sending the chief justice abroad on the pretext of medical treatment.
