Four Rohingyas, including three toddlers, have been killed after wild elephants attacked a temporary encampment set up in the hills of Cox’s Bazar.

Confirming the accident local police inspector Md Kae Kislu said the attack occurred in Ukhiya Upazila at 12:45pm on Saturday.

The identities of the deceased could not be known yet.

Since Aug. 25, some 536,000 Rohingya have crossed from Myanmar's western state of Rakhine into Bangladesh, according to the UN.

The refugees are fleeing a military operation in which security forces and Buddhist mobs have killed men, women and children, looted homes and torched Rohingya villages.

The Rohingya, described by the UN as the world's most persecuted people, have faced heightened fears of attack since dozens were killed in communal violence in 2012.
