BD seeks support of non-resident envoys in Delhi over Rohingya issue

Bangladesh has briefed the non-resident envoys of about 76 countries, who are accredited to Bangladesh but based in New Delhi, seeking their support to any international move to pressurise Myanmar to repatriate their nationals forcibly displaced from its Rakhine state. 

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali held separate briefings with the non-resident envoys of about 76 countries on the issue, said the High Commission on Saturday.

High Commissioner Muazzem Ali on Saturday also spoke to journalists on Saturday to know the latest position of Rohingya exodus into Bangladesh and how Dhaka is coping with the huge humanitarian disaster arising from what the UN has described as ‘an example of classic ethnic cleansing’. 

Up to 612,000 Rohingya people have fled to Bangladesh since Myanmar's brutal crackdown on the minority ethnic community since August 25 in addition to over 400,000 Rohingyas already sheltered in Bangladesh raising the number to over one million, he said.

The international community has expressed support and solidarity with Bangladesh in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's five-point proposals she presented at the current UN General Assembly session calling for an unconditional and immediate return of the displaced Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar and the implementation of Kofi Anan Commission's report.
