A grand citizens’ rally will be held at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital today to celebrate UNESCO’s recognition of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic 7th March speech as part of the world’s documentary heritage.

Dr Anisuzzaman, Professor Emeritus at the University of Dhaka, will preside over the rally where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League president, will attend as the chief guest. The rally being held under the banner of Nagorik Committee, will start at 2:30pm.

The UNESCO on October 31 recognised the historic 7th March speech of Bangabandhu as part of the world’s documentary heritage.

It may be mentioned that the ruling AL is planning to assemble thousands of people in the rally to show its organisational strength ahead of the upcoming city polls and next year’s general elections.

On Friday, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader visited Suhrawardy Udyan, the venue of the citizens’ rally, to see himself ongoing preparations of the rally.

Talking to journalists, Quader said that the rally organised by Nagorik Committee is not a counter of the BNP’s rally.

“Why you are considering the rally as a counter programme? We are not used to do so.

The rally is just a celebration of recognition of the 7th March speech,” he said in reply to a query.

He said that people from all strata of life will attend the rally as the March 7 rally was not only a programme of Awami League.

“I think people who believe in the ideologies of freedom fight and independence will participate in the rally organised by Nagorik Committee,” he added.

AL leaders Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Mirza Azam, AKM Enamul Haque Shamim, Ashim Kumar Ukil, among others, accompanied Quader.

It may be mentioned that AL organised a number of meetings to make the Nagorik Committee-arranged rally a success.
