Bangladesh government today allotted Tk 2,312 crore for temporarily accommodating the Rohingya refugees, who fled persecution in Myanmar and await repatriation.

The project, Ashrayan-3, will be implemented by the Bangladesh navy, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal told reporters a meeting of a top government body.

The meeting of Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), held at the planning commission, also decided that will be a fast-track project.

Rohingya refugees will be temporarily sheltered in the project Ashrayan-3 that will be implemented at Bhashanchar area in Hatiya of Noakhali, the minister said.

After the Rohingyas leave, the project will be used to accommodate the poor of Bangladesh.

According to latest estimates, over 700,000 Rohingya refugees have fled into Bangladesh after an escalation in violence in Rakhine state amid outright denial of Myanmar.

In the latest update to this humanitarian crisis that met universal condemnation, Bangladesh and Myanmar have struck a deal for the repatriation process of the refugees.

However, experts are well concerned with the deal, especially because its contents remain undisclosed.
