Children to get specialised library: Noor

Minister of Cultural Affairs Asaduzzaman Noor on Tuesday said the government is mulling to establish libraries especially for children. 

The minister came up with the information as a chief guest of a workshop titled ‘Library for Literacy’, part of the ‘Beyond Access’ project implemented by Save the Children, at the conference room of Central Public Library in the capital.

The minister said, “We are thinking of establishing the specialised libraries for children and adults and also working to make sure of their engagement in it.  It is important to introduce such more initiatives to build children as a complete human being. Initiatives have already been taken to digitise and modernise the libraries of the country with the collaboration of the British Council.”

“It is urgent to ensure the environment of cultural activities alongside the regular education to make their childhood enjoyable and secure their mental development. The government is also putting importance on the issue,” he continued.

Inaugurating the workshop, Deputy Country Director of Save the Children in Bangladesh Dr Ishtiaq Mannan said, “The libraries can play a special role to increase the interest in reading and developing children's learning skills. With this goal, the project has been implemented in 11 districts of the country with the assistance of AEXA and USAID Read Programs 2015.”

Director General of Public Library Department Ashish Kumar Sarker presided over the workshop where a presentation was displayed highlighting the results of the project implementation.
