Chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda denied the allegations made by the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) that voters in Rangpur civic polls on Thursday were being intimidated by the ruling Awami League men.

He rather expressed his satisfaction at the overall situation of the balloting in the Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) elections.

The CEC made the remarks while responding to queries from newsmen at Nirbachon Bhaban in Dhaka in the morning.

“I have collected information from the voters since the morning. The media are also working there. No information of intimidating the voters was submitted to me,” Huda claimed.

He said he had also talked to the people in charge of the polling stations where electronic voting machine (EVM) is being used. “No flaws were reported so far,” he added.

The CEC, however, said though EVM would be used in some polling centres of local government elections, it would not be possible to use the voting machines in the next general elections.
