The indefinite hunger strike called by primary assistant teachers of government primary schools entered the third day on Monday.

At least 40 teachers fell sick during the hunger strike. Among them, 17 were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hosiptal (DMCH) and some others were taken to certain private hospitals for treatment.

The strike started on Saturday morning at the Shaheed Minar.

The Bangladesh primary teachers grand alliance organised the strike where eight different organisations of assistant primary teachers joined the alliance. The leaders said they would continue the strike till their demands were met.

The protesting teachers said it was discriminatory and humiliating that they were paid the 14th grade salary whereas a headmaster gets salary of the 11th grade.

They demanded that their salary be upgraded to the 12th grade.

Several political party leaders including Bangladesh Communist Party leader Ruhin Hossain Prince expressed solidarity with the protesting teachers.
