12 lakh migrant workers to be sent in 2018: Minister

The government is planning to send 12 lakh migrant workers abroad this year, Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Nurul Islam said today.

“Our priority is to send skilled workers aboard,” the minister said while briefing media at the ministry’s conference room. The ministry organised the briefing to highlight its achievement in 2017.

“Last year, we sent more than 10 lakh workers to different countries beating all the previous records of the country,” he said. “This year we are planning to send 12 lakh migrant workers.”

Asked about the allegation of highest migration cost, Minister Nurul said, “We have not yet received any allegation in this regard. “If we receive any allegation, we will take action against agencies who charge higher from the workers,” he said.

The country received a total of 13,526 million USD remittance this year, according to Bangladesh Bank, the minister said.
