Panic has broken out among the people in the country as the ruling Awami League and opposition BNP have appeared in a political tug-of-war over Thursday’s verdict in a graft case against Khaleda Zia.

Many say sheer panic has gripped the people as political mayhem may take place in the country on the day of the verdict.

The national politics has started to be heated after a Dhaka court fixed February 8 for delivering a verdict in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman and four others.

BNP senior leaders have threatened to wage tougher street movement if their party chief is convicted in the ‘false’ case.

They have also threatened to take to the street during the delivery of the verdict.

Recently, Khaleda Zia has asked her party leaders and activists to get ready for carrying out a ‘peaceful’ movement if she is convicted and sent to jail.

Amid high tensions, the government has taken all-out measures to protect lives and property of the people from any possible political violence.

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said on Tuesday that AL leaders and activists will remain alert to fend off any untoward incident over the verdict.

“If any unpleasant situation arises, we will assist law enforcement agencies in ensuring security of people’s lives and property,” he said.

AL advisory council member Tofail Ahmed said law enforcement agencies will take stern action if BNP men create anarchy following the verdict.

Tofail, also commerce minister, said AL activists will not take to the street to face BNP men.

“Why will we take to the street? Law enforcers will remain on the street and take action,” he said.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Tuesday imposed a restriction on holding any rally and procession in the capital from 4:00am tomorrow until further notice.

Besides, carrying any kind of sticks, knives or other sharp weapons and explosives or inflammable materials in the city has been banned, DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said in a notice.

Any kind of demonstration or procession disrupting traffic and public movement will not be allowed, he added.

In the past, political violence has flared up in the country during the street movement of political parties, leaving many dead.
