Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Javed Patwari on Thursday said the security arrangement taken across the country centring the verdict against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case will continue as long as it is needed.

He came up with the remark after visiting six policemen, who were injured during clashes with BNP supporters in the city before the special court at Bakshibazar sentenced the BNP chief to five years in prison in the much-talked-about graft case, at Rajarbagh Central Police Hospital in the city in the evening.

The special security measures were taken to protect people’s lives and property apprehending probable untoward incidents centring the verdict. “We’ve arranged area-based security measures across the country,” the IGP said.

Replying to a question, he said police were given strict instructions to ensure that no innocent person is harassed or arrested.

“Like in the past, we didn’t carry out a mass arrest, rather a target arrest,” Javed said, adding that those who faced arrest warrants are being arrested. And the number of arrest is a little bit more than the usual one.”

He said security measures were good throughout the day today (Thursday). “We’ve taken the responsibility of treatment of the six injured policemen.”

The IGP further said if anybody tries to engage in arson terrorism again, they will not be spared.

The six policemen were injured in clashes with BNP leaders and activists at various places, including Kakrail and Bakshibazar, in the capital on Thursday.
