The National Jute Day-2018 is being observed today throughout the country amid enthusiasm with a view to making jute goods popular among the people.

The government took up elaborate programmes including rallies, road shows, art competition, poetry festival, seminars and symposiums and already started holding some of these events since February 27 marking the National Jute Day on March 6.

On February 22, 2017, the government decided to observe National Jute Day on March 6 every year for exploring potentials of the golden fibre and boost its demand in both local and international markets.

On the eve of the day, President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages greeting people of the jute sector.

This year, twelve individuals and organisations will receive the National Jute Award under 11 categories for their contributions to development of the jute sector.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will hand over the awards at a ceremony at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) here today.

She will also inaugurate a three-day jute fair there.

Besides, the Prime Minister will hand over awards to six winners of a countrywide essay competition in two categories at the same function.
