Man gets life term for killing college boy in Pirojpur

A court here on Monday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for killing a college boy in Mathbaria upazila in 2006.

The convicted man was Rafiqul Islam Raja, a resident of Sonakhali village.

The court also fined him Tk 10,000, in default, he has to serve six more months in jail.

According to the prosecution, Jahidul Islam Jasim, 18, son of Hemayet Uddin Mollah at Badurtola village in Sapleja union in Mathbaria upazila and a student of class XI of Rustam Ali Farazi College, bought a mobile phone from Raja. Later, they had a loggerhead as Raja did not give him charger with the mobile set.

Later, in an arbitration in October 26, 2006, Raja beat Jasim and hit on his head with a stick, leaving him critically injured. The injured Jasim succumbed to his injuries at the hospital after two hours.

Later, a case was filed with Mathbaria Police Station against six people.

After examining all the records and 10 witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge S M Zillur Rahman handed down the verdict acquitting five people.
