10 more suspected drug peddlers killed in ‘gunfights’

Ten more suspected drug peddlers were killed in separate ‘gunfights’ with law enforcers in different parts of the country early Thursday.

Of them, two each were killed in Feni, Cumilla and Magura while one each died in Narayanganj, Brahmanbaria, Cox’s Bazar and Satkhira.

With the latest figures, a total of 59 people were killed in last 13 days across the country during ‘gunfights’ with law enforcers.

In Feni, two suspected drug peddlers were killed in a reported gunfight between their cohorts and police in Jammura area under Phulgazi upazila early Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Shahmiran alias Shamim, son of Mohammad Mostafa of Maij village, and Majnu Mia alias Monir, son of Fatik Mia of Mantala villages in Phulgazi upazila.

Humayun Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Phulgazi police station (PS), said: “Being informed that some drug peddlers had gathered in bordering Jammura area, a police team conducted a drive there.”

Sensing police presence, they opened fire prompting police to retaliate, triggering the gunfight, leaving Shamim and Monir dead on the spot.

A gun, 700 pieces of Yaba and 200 bottles of Phensidyl were recovered from the spot. Both of them were accused in 10 drug-related cases, the police official said.

In Cumilla, two suspected drug traders were killed in two separate ‘gunfights’ between their cohorts and police in Chouddagram and Sadar Dakkhin upazilas early Thursday.

Babul alias Lamba Babul, son of Hafez Ahmed of Boidderkhil village in Chouddagram upazila, was killed in the 'gunfight' with police at Amanganda Salakanda on Dhaka-Chattogram highway around 1:00 am, said Chouddagram OC Abul Foysal.

“He was wanted in five cases,” the OC said.

In another drive, Rajib, son of Shah Alam of Changini village in Sadar Dakkhin upazila was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Goalmatha in Sadar Dakkhin upazila around 2:15 am, said Sadar Dakkhin PS OC Nazrul Islam.

“He was also wanted in 13 cases,” the police official added.

In Magura, two alleged drug peddlers, Ayub Sheikh and Mizanur Rahman, were found dead in Parnanduali Housing Project area in the district town during gunfights between two gangs of drug peddlers.

Tariqul Islam, the additional superintendent of police (ASP) of Magura, said: “Being informed that two gangs of drug peddlers were exchanging fire  between them over establishing supremacy, a team of police went to Parnanduali Housing Project area in the district town around 1:30 am and recovered the bullet-hit bodies.

“Twenty-one cases were lodged against Ayub while 18 cases were lodged against Mizanur,” he said.

In Narayanganj, Selim alias Fancy Selim, son of Abul Kashem of Sanarpar area, was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Dakkhin Nimai Kashari in Siddhirganj early Thursday.

Siddhirganj OC Abdus Sattar said: “Police arrested Fancy Selim along with 5,000 Yaba pills from Sanarpar on Wednesday.”

Later, police taking Sharfuddin with them conducted a drive in Dakkhin Nimai Kashari area to nab his accomplices.

After a ‘gunfight,’ the police team recovered the body of Fancy Selim, but others managed to flee.

Police seized firearm and drugs from the spot.

Three policemen were also injured during the ‘gunfight’.

In Brahmanbaria, Amir Kha, an alleged drug peddler, also an accused in a murder case, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Bangaj Steel Bridge in Akhaura early Thursday.

Amir Kha, son of late Suruj Kha of Chandpur village in Akhaura upazila was wanted in 12 cases, according to police.

Akhaura OC Mosharraf Hossain Tarafdar said: “We conducted an anti-drug drive in Bangaj Steel Bridge area around 2:00am and arrested Amir Kha.”

At that time, the accomplices of Amir Kha tried to snatch him away triggering a ‘gunfight.’ Amir Kha died on the spot while three police officials were also injured during the incident.

“Police recovered a pipe gun, a cartridge, a sharp weapon, 10 kilogram of hemp and eight bottles of cough syrup,” the OC said.

“The deceased was an accused in 12 cases of murder and drug trade,” the police official said.

In Cox’s Bazar, a ‘drug peddler’ was killed in a gunfight between two gangs of ‘drug peddlers’ in Adarsha Gram area of Cox’s Bazar.

The deceased was identified as Hasan, son of late Khuillal Mia, hailed from Kolatoli Adarsha Gram.

Cox’s Bazar OC Farid Uddin Khandakar said: “Acting on a secret information that two gangs of drug peddlers were engaged in exchanging gunfire over establishing supremacy, a police team rushed Adarsha Gram in the district town around 1:30 am and recovered the bullet-hit body.”

Police seized a locally-made gun and two bullets from the spot.

In Satkhira, police recovered the bullet-hit body of a suspected drug peddler at Hizla Chandipur in Kaliganj upazila early Thursday.

Being informed by locals, police recovered the body of Abdul Aziz of Parandah village in Sadar upazila, from the area and sent it to Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy, said Kaliganj OC Hasan Hafizur Rahman.

One shutter gun, five bullets and 48 bottles of phensidyl syrup were recovered from the spot.

He was wanted in several cases filed under Narcotics Control Act, said the OC.

Police suspected that Aziz might have been killed following enmity between two groups of drug traders.
