Unknown assailants have shot dead a local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League or BCL in Kushtia’s Sadar Upazila.

The man has been identified as 27-year-old Nazmul Islam, vice-president of the BCL’s district unit, and son of Altaf Hossain in Hatash Haripur village.

The incident took place around 2:30am on Wednesday, said Nasir Uddin, chief of Kushtia Model Police Station.

Nazmul started working for the Awami League after graduating from Kushtia Government College, said Yasir Arafat Tushar, president of the BCL’s district unit.

The victim’s father said Nazmul and his wife Urmi Khatun were at home at night. “I heard the sound of bullets from Nazmul's house in the middle of the night. I found him lying in a pool of blood on the floor. Then, he was rushed to Sadar Hospital at Kushtia.”

Nazmul was brought to the hospital with head injuries around 3:30am on Wednesday, according to doctor Mehedi Hasan Jony. The doctor later declared him dead.

Police said they have visited the place immediately after the incident, but are yet to find any motive for the killing. However, they believe the murder stemmed from an old feud.
