The 21st session of the 10th parliament, known as the budget session, begins this morning (Tuesday) with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

This is the last budget session of the current parliament being led by Awami League.

Political parties find the session very crucial before the 11th parliamentary elections to be held in December this year.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith is expected to place the proposed budget for 2018-2019 fiscal year at 12:30pm on June 7.

Speaking at a pre-budget discussion, Muhith hinted that the size of the budget would be Tk 4,68,000 crore (4.68 trillion) with a target of 7.8 percent GDP growth.

On June 1, last year, the finance minister placed a Tk 4.02 trillion budget with a target of 7.4 percent GDP growth for 2017-2018 fiscal year.

Before the beginning of the session, the Business Advisory Committee, headed by the Speaker, will sit at a meeting to decide the tenure of the session.

As per practice, parliament holds a long session as the lawmakers run discussions on the proposed budget.

The discussions on the proposed budget will start on June 10 while the proposed budget is likely to be passed on June 28.

Besides the budget proposal, the House will also pass some important bills during the session.
