'Keep sanctity of Ramadan': LGRD Minister urges Mayors

Minister of Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain today urged the city corporation Mayors to keep strong monitoring on price hike of essential commodities and cleanliness of their respected areas to keep sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan. 

"It is our holy duty to ensure adequate supply of commodities in the kitchen markets and maintain cleanliness across the country during the Ramadan. 

The minister made his plea while exchanging views with Mayors, Acting Mayors and other representatives of the Mayors ahead of the month of Ramadan at the ministry conference room.

Urging the mayors to collect essential formalin test kits immediately, the minister asked the mayors to take stern actions for food adulterations.

Eng Mosharraf also asked the commerce ministry for imposing stronger restrictions on import of wholesale formalin as it causes serious health hazards. 

All the mayors highlighted the illegal establishments as major problem of their city dwellers especially on walkway at the meeting.

They mayors urged the Police Commissioners to take sincere initiatives to free the illegal establishments to provide a relief of the people during the holy month. 

The mayors also showed their anxiety for smooth water and electricity supply during the holy month at that meeting. 

The minister assured them to hold meetings with Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) and electric supply authority for smooth water and power supply management during Ramadan.

Dhaka South City mayor Sayeed Khokon, Narayanganj City Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy and secretary of the ministry Abdul Malek were present among others.
