24pc progress in Karnaphuli Tunnel work: Quader

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said around 24 percent overall progress of Karnaphuli tunnel construction under the government to government (G2G) project has already been achieved.

He disclosed the progress to reporters, after inspecting the construction works at Patenga of Chittagong Saturday (August 25).

Deputy Project Director (Admin) Dr Anupam Saha showed minister the shed and tunnel boring machine (TBM). A boring machine is used for excavating tunnels with a circular cross section.

In June 2015, the government signed a deal with China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) for construction of the 4-km tunnel underneath the river Karnaphuli.

The tunnel will connect the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar Highway with the proposed Asian Highway.

It will cost Tk 8,466.64 crore. Of which, China will provide Tk 5,500 crore.
