9 killed in road crashes across the country

At least nine people were killed and eight others were injured in separate road accidents in Gopalganj, Barguna, Cumilla, Gazipur, Sylhet and Khagrachhari districts on Tuesday.

In Gopalganj, Sihab Uddin, 35, a motorcyclist was killed as a speeding bus ran over him on Dhaka-Khulna highway at Bijoypasha village in Sadar upazila at noon. 

The accident took place when the passenger bus collided the motorcycle, leaving him died on the spot said Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station.  

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Gopalganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy. 

In Barguna, two people were killed as a bus hit a motorcycle on Barguna-Barishal regional highway in Betagi upazila.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Aziz Sikdar, 70, and Md Hanif Akon, 75, of the upazila.

Witnesses said the bus crashed into the motorcycle at noon, leaving Aziz dead on the spot and Hanif and another rider Mohammad Liton injured.

Officer-in-charge of Betagi Police Station Mamunur Rashid said the injured were taken to Betagi Health Complex where doctors declared Hanif dead. Liton was later sent to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal.

In Cumilla, a schoolboy was killed as a speeding truck ran over him on Cumilla-Sylhet regional road in Debidari municipality area.

The deceased was identified as Raju Hossain, 14, son of Md Giasuddin of Barera village of the municipality. 

The accident took place when a cement laden truck ran over him around 2pm, leaving critically injured.

Later, he was taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead, police said.  

On the other hand, a man and his minor son were killed while his wife and daughter injured as a CNG-run auto-rickshaw carrying them hit a roadside tree in Palpara area of Sadar upazila on Tuesday morning.

The deceased were identified as Aminul Islam, 40, son of late Aftab Uddin and his son Wasi Islam, 4, hailing from Dakhshin Khan in the capital.

The accident took around 7 am when the auto-rickshaw dashed into the tree after its driver lost control over the wheel, leaving four critically injured, said Abu Salam Miah, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.

The injured were rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital where Aminul and Wasi succumbed to their injuries, said the OC adding that the driver went into hiding after the incident.

In Gazipur, a vegetable vendor was killed as a pick-up van carrying him rammed into a parked truck in Salna area of the city early Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Fazlur Rahman Badal, 28, hailing from Naogaon district.

The accident took place when the driver of the pick-up van lost his control over the steering and smashed into the parked truck, leaving Badal dead on the spot, said Md Ohiduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Naojor Highway Police Station.

In Sylhet, Kamrul Islam, 45, a trader was killed when a Dhaka-bound bus ran him over on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Lalbazar in South Surma upazila around 11:30am, said Khairul Fazal, officer-in-charge of South Surma Police Station.  

In Natore, a motorcyclist was killed as a three-wheeler hit behind it on Natore-Rajshahi highway at Chandpur in Sadar upazila. 

Sajal was taken to a private hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead in the afternoon, said police. 

In Khagrachhari, another motorcyclist was killed in a head-on clash in Guimara upazila. 

The deceased was identified as Md Al-Amin, 33, son of Keramat Ali of Badungpara of the upazila. 

The accident took place when a bus of Shamaly Paribhan collided the motorcycle, leaving him dead on the spot, said Md Giasuddin, officer-in-charge of Guimara Police Station.
