New transport law to be placed before the parliament on Sunday

The proposed Road Transport Act 2018 will be placed before the parliament on Sunday, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said today.

From there, he hoped, the proposed law will be sent to a parliamentary committee and consequently passed in the last session of parliament in October.

Quader was speaking to reporters after the board meeting of Dhaka Road Transport Coordination Authority’s office at Nagar Bhaban this morning.

The new law, as drafted, proposes a maximum punishment of five years' imprisonment for causing death to a person by reckless driving.

It also suggested that the number of vehicles be regulated in certain areas and funds be set up for treatment of the injured in road accidents and compensation for the victims' families.
