A youth was reportedly killed and several others were injured as transport workers engaged in clash with police in Postogola area of Dhaka this morning.

The deceased, Sohel, 29, was a driver of a three-wheeler, said transport workers from the spot.

Sohel was taken to Ikuria General Hospital with bullet injures, where doctors declared him dead around 10:00am, the agitating workers said.

The clash ensued as transport workers were agitating in protest against increased toll rate at Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge in Postogola since this morning.

The law enforcers are trying to bring the situation under control, a police official on the spot said seeking anonymity.

Kamal Parvez, a transport workers’ leader, said that toll money is still being collected from vehicles at the bridge and the toll rate was increased three days before although the duration of toll collection has already expired several years back.

Police retaliated with gunshots after the agitating workers hurled brick bats on them, witnesses said.

Several vehicles including police car were vandalised in the clash.

Movement of vehicles was disrupted on the both sides of the bridge and in the area due to the clash since the morning.

The situation came under control after around 12:00pm and movement of vehicle resumed, but tension is still prevailing there.
