Five of a family including a child sustained burn injuries in an explosion believed to have been caused by a gas line leak in Ashulia of Savar this morning.

The victims identified as Abdur Rab, 30; Arab Ali, 50; Hasina, 40; Ripa, 20; and her two-year old daughter Ayesha have been admitted to the Burn and Plastic Surgery unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), said Sub-Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH Police Outpost.

Four of the victims are stated to be in critical condition as they suffered more than 60 percent burns.

The explosion took place on the ground floor of a two-storey building in Manikganjpara area around 7:00am, said Rezaul Haque, officer-in-charge of Ashulia Police Station.

“I heard a loud bang and saw the entire flat was on fire,” said Mukta Begum, a neighbor of the victims.

Fire service officials are primarily suspecting that the explosion occurred due to leakage in the gas line.
