‘JMB leader’, ‘drug trader’ killed in ‘gunfights’

A suspected leader of banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh and an alleged drug trader were killed in two reported gunfights in Bogura and Meherpur districts early Tuesday.

In Bogura, Khorshed Alam alias Shamim, 38, former ameer of the banned militant outfit, was killed in the reported gunfight with police in an area under Shibganj Police Station around 2:30 am.

Police also recovered two firearms and three round bullets from the spot, said Sanatan Chakraborty, additional superintendent of Bogra police.

In Meherpur, Enamul Haque Ena, 42, son of Toaz Ali of Shyampur village, also a listed drug trader of the district, was killed in the gunfight with detectives in Nishchintapur Bottola area of Sadar upazila around 2:30 am.

Being informed that a gang of drug traders was staying in the area, a team of detectives conducted drive in the area, said Obaidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch of Police.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the gang members opened fire on them, prompting them to fire back, triggering the gunfight which left Ena injured with bullet.

Later, the injured was taken to Meherpur General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Ena was accused in eight cases including three murder cases, said the OC adding that they recovered a one shooter gun and 63 bottles of Phensidyl from the spot.

Three policemen--assistant sub-inspector Ibrahim and constables Sohag Miah and Masud Hasan—were injured in the gunfight.
