Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government has taken various steps to facilitate trade and commerce and create a conducive atmosphere for business community.

Awami League government does not like to harvest any political and individual benefit from business, she said, adding that the measures aim at developing the country economically.

She was addressing a conference organised by Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital today.

She said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman wanted to ensure better life of the countrymen.

Bangabandhu took initiative to reactivate all shut and abandoned industries for the development of business sector and pushed Bangladesh towards Least Development Country (LDC), she said.

The premier said Father of the Nation contributed to socioeconomic development within three and a half years into independence. But all development was put on hold after assassination of Bangabandhu and most of his family members on August 15, 1975, she added.

Sheikh Hasina said her government privatised power sector so that they can contribute to power generation needed for residential and commercial purposes.

The government cannot do everything alone, she added. “In 2014 election manifesto, we wanted to produce 14,000 MW electricity but we have been able to produce 20,000 MW which is more than that promised,” she added.

Awami League president said whenever she goes abroad, she takes business leaders as entourages enabling them to know the demand of their products in the overseas market.

The premier said she would like to materialise unfinished task of her father and render the country Switzerland of the East as envisaged by him.
