2 girls killed in city road crash, 40 vehicles vandalised

Garments workers staged demonstration on a road in Hatirjheel area of the capital following death of their two fellows in a road accident in Malibagh area this afternoon.

The agitating workers also vandalised 40 vehicles and torched two others protesting the accident.

Two garments workers Meem, 13, and Nahid Parvin Poly, 19, died as a bus of ‘Suprabhat Paribahan’ hit them in Malibagh rail crossing area around 1:30pm, said Inspector Md Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost.

Hearing the news, several hundred workers of garment factory ‘MH’ took to the street and vandalised 40 vehicles. They also set fire to two other vehicles, witnesses said.

Two units of firefighters were working to douse the fire, said Rana Mia, an official of the fire service and civil defence headquarters.

The workers were staging demonstration till filing the report around 6:00pm.

Meanwhile, the bodies were sent to DMC morgue for autopsy, Inspector Bachchu said.

Police arrested the driver and seized the bus, Shiblee Noman, additional deputy commissioner (Motijheel zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said adding that additional industrial policemen were sent to the spot to take the situation under control.
