The banned militant outfit JMB was planning to snatch away prisoners of Gulshan café attack in a manner similar to the incident in Trishal in 2014, Rab claimed today.

The militants were planning for an attack as the accused of the Dhaka attack case are taken to court from different jails for the trial, Rab said.

Arrestee Mamunur Rashid alias Ripon alias Rezaul Karim alias Reza, a member of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), confessed it to the Rab during a primary interrogation, Mufti Mahmud Khan, director of Rab's legal and media wing, claimed in a press briefing at its media centre in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar.

Around Tk 39 crore, arms and ammunition were supplied from a neighboring country for the attack at Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan in 2016, he claimed.

He was the key arms and explosive supplier and also the financer of Gulshan café attack in 2016.

The arrestee Mamunur Rashid alias Ripon alias Rezaul Karim alias Reza, the accused of the case filed over the attack at Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan, was arrested from Gazipur, he said.

The elite force also recovered Tk 1,50,000 in cash from his procession, the Rab offical added.

Ripon and another JMB man Shariful Islam Khaled, who were involved in the killing of Prof Rezaul Karim Siddiquee, went to India months before the Gulshan café siege possibly to ensure supply of firearms for the terror attack, according to police.

Both the JMB leaders left for India in April in 2016, days after the murder of the Rajshahi University professor Rezaul Karim.
