5 burnt as bus catches fire in Dhanmondi

At least five passengers of a bus sustained burn injuries as the vehicle caught fire from a gas pipeline leakage on Mirpur Road in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area this afternoon.

The bus of Number-7 caught fire in front of Sunrise Plaza near Dhanmondi-27 around 3:35 due to the gas pipeline leakage, said Ashraful Islam, station officer of Mohammadpur fire service station.

Five of the bus passengers suffered burns in the fire, the fire station official said adding that a pickup van also caught fire at that time.

On information, two units of firefighters rushed to the spot and doused the blaze, he said.

Of the injured, two were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital while three others to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, Ashraful added.

One side of the road from Rapa Plaza to Manik Mia Avenue remain blocked following the incident as the gas was still coming out from the pipeline till 6pm.
