PIB Director General Shah Alamgir passes away

Director General of Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) Shah Alamgir died at a Hospital in Dhaka on Thursday. He was 62.

The distinguished journalist breathed his last at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) around 10am while undergoing treatment, said journalist Rahman Mustafiz.

The veteran journalist was suffering from thalassaemia and diabetes.

He was admitted to the hospital on February 21 and later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) the next day as his condition deteriorated.

Alamgir's journalism career started in his student life. He started his journalism by joining the first child-teen weekly Kishore Bangla. He worked as the co-editor here from 1980 to 1984.

He also worked for Dainik Janata, Banglar Bani, Daily Azad and Daily Sangbad. He served the Prothom Alo from November 1998 to September 2001 as the joint editor.

Then he started working in electronic media. He served Channel I as chief news editor, Ekushey Television as head of news, Jamuna Television as director (News), and Macharanga Television as head of the news.

Along with journalism, Alamgir served as president and general secretary of Dhaka Union of Journalists. 

He was a member of the Board of Directors of Bangladesh Shishu Academy prior to joining the PIB.

He left behind his wife, son, daughter, and a host of followers to mourn his death.
