BCL in demo rejecting Ducsu election result

Ruling party’s front Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) is demonstrating in front of the vice chancellor’s residence rejecting the results of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election.

They began the protests this morning, after quota reform leader Nurul Haque Nur was elected vice president of Ducsu in the elections held yesterday.

They burned two tyres near the VC residence, chanting slogans that the election was “a farce” and demanding re-election to the post of Ducsu VP.

Chhatra League's demand for re-election comes after wave of protests yesterday by all major opposing panels who boycotted the election alleging irregularities.

“We cannot accept a Shibir man Nur as the VP of a prestigious institution like Dhaka University,” Alimul Huq, ex-central library secretary of Chhatra League.

He said, their demonstration will continue until their demands are met. “Nur was involved in attack on VC’s residence. He can’t be the VP of Ducsu.”

CLASSES BOYCOTTED, TRAFFIC RESTRICTED

Classes were boycotted this morning after the panels of leftists, quota reformists, and independents called a student strike in protest yesterday.

They said, the election should be retaken and in a proper manner.

Our correspondent visited classrooms throughout the Faculty of Fine Arts and found out that no classes were being held. Examinations were outside the purview of the strike.

Vehicular movement was also found to be restricted inside Dhaka University. Very few private cars or personal vehicles were being allowed to enter.

Chhatra League activists were blocking the entrance at Nilkhet intersection, not allowing any vehicles to enter. Even a teacher was seen to have been turned away.

WHAT HAPPENED TO DUCSU ELECTION?

The 28-year-long wait to Ducsu election was marred in election boycott of all the major panels over allegations of irregularities and vote rigging.

Only Chhatra League was the major panel left contesting in the election.

The opposition panels exploded in protests after boycotting the election and protested in campus demanding a re-election to Ducsu. They called a student strike.

Proof of irregularities was found in Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall, for which the provost was relieved of duties yesterday. Stashed unstamped ballots were found in Ruqayyah Hall.

Also, there has been physical assault on Nurul Haque Nur and another attempted attack on leftists’ panel leader Liton Nandi.

Later, in the results announced in the wee hours of today, Nur was announced as the VP candidate, Chhatra League’s Golam Rabbani as secretary, and Saddam as assistant general secretary.
