Foot overbridge in the name of Abrar

As per the demand of the students demonstrating for safe road, Dhaka North City Corporation today laid foundation of a foot overbridge on Pragati Sarani, where a university student was killed in a road crash yesterday.

The overbridge will be named after Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, who was killed as a bus ran him over while he was reportedly using a zebra crossing near Bashundhara Residential Area, touching off a firestorm of protests.

The foot-over bridge was inaugurated by DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam and Abrar’s father Brig Gen (retd) Arif Ahmed Chowdhury around 11:30am.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, vice chancellor of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) and other high officials were also present during the inaugural programme.

After the inauguration, the police commissioner addressed the students when he detailed all the measures being taken by the government to make the roads safer.

"We are trying our best to bring back order on the roads," he said.
