Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atikul Islam on Saturday said actions will be taken against the owners of business establishments and shop owners’ associations if it is found that they do not have necessary fire-extinguishing system in their establishments.

Information will be collected whether markets, business establishments and shopping centres in the city have proper fire-extinguishing system, said the mayor while visiting Gulshan DNCC Kitchen market that caught fire in the morning.

He said there was no fire-extinguishing system in the market when the fire broke out in 2017 and neither it was there today.

“We had wanted to build a permanent DNCC market here. But there are complexities as a case is pending. After the settlement of case, we’ll build the market as soon as possible where there will be all the facilities for extinguishing fire,” the mayor added.

Just two days after a major fire in the city’s Banani area left 25 people dead, another fire broke out at Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) kitchen market in Gulshan area early Saturday and gutted all the 221 shops of the market.
