State-run water supply company Wasa has assured swift steps to make its supply water for Dhaka’s Jurain area drinkable.

Wasa Director AKM Shahid Uddin gave out the assurance today to a group of protestors who tried to serve supply water “juice” to Wasa officials.

Five protesters from Jurain went to Wasa Bhaban, holding a jar of muddy liquid, what they said was juice made from Jurain’s supply water.

They were trying to make Wasa’s managing director drink the “juice” in protest to remarks that Wasa water is “100 per cent drinkable”.

Managing Director Taqsem Khan was unreachable and instead Wasa’s Director AKM Shahid Uddin went out to calm the protestors down.

He assured the protestors that swift steps will be taken to ensure drinkable water supply to Jurain area. However, he did not drink the “juice”.

“We do not believe in assurance,” said Mizanur Rahman, a protestor. “We will gather more people and move for safe supply water in Jurain.”

“We, the Jurain people, have been suffering from polluted water supply for a long time,” he said, demanding apology from the Wasa MD for his remarks.

Responding to a report of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), Wasa MD Khan said Wasa water is 100 per cent drinkable.

He rubbished TIB’s report that said 91 per cent of Dhaka city dwellers boil the supply water from Wasa to make it drinkable.
