3 held with fake notes in Dhaka

Detectives today claimed to have arrested three members of a currency counterfeiting gang and recovered fake notes worth around Tk 46 lakh from them.

The arrestees are: Jiban alias Sabuj, 28; Jamal Uddin, 32; and Babul alias Babu, 24.

A team of Detective Branch (South Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police led by Assistant Police Commissioner Md Rafiqul Islam conducted a drive in East Rasulpur area of Kamrangirchar in Old Dhaka around 5:10pm yesterday and arrested Sabuj and Jamal from a house there, said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of DMP.

Fake notes worth Tk 7 lakh were also recovered from them, the official said.

Based on information provided by the duo, the law enforcers conducted another raid on the same day at a house in Islambagh area of Dhaka’s Chawkbazar around 7:20pm and arrested Babul with fake notes worth Tk 38.68 lakh, Masudur Rahman said.

One laptop, two printers, and other equipment for printing counterfeit notes were seized during the drives.

In primary interrogation, the arrestees confessed to their crimes and said that they used to print counterfeit notes and traded those in Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna and other districts.

A case has been filed with Kamrangirchar Police Station in this connection.
