One suspected drug peddler and three “robbers” were killed in what police claimed a gunfight in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar early today.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Junayed, Mohammad Ayub, Mehedi and the suspected drug peddler Imran Mollah, said Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge (OC) of Teknaf Police Station.

Acting on a tip-off that a robber gang was planning to conduct a robbery, a team of police conducted a raid in Nurullah Ghona area of the upazila, the OC said.

Sensing the presence of the police team, the criminals started firing on them, triggering a “gunfight” in retaliation in Baharchara Dhargachara area near Marine Drive in the district, the official said.

Later, the bodies were recovered and sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue.

Police recovered seven local arms, five sharp weapons and 25 rounds of bullets from the spot.
