2 die of dengue in Satkhira

Two persons have died of dengue fever while 308 others have been infected with the mosquito-borne disease so far in Satkhira, doctors said.

The deceased were identified as Shahnara Khatun, 37, and Alamgir Gazi, 14.

Of them, Shahanara died of dengue early today while Alamgir died yesterday evening, said Satkhira Civil Surgeon Dr Abu Shaheen.

“Shahnara was admitted to Satkhira Sadar hospital after she was diagnosed with dengue on August 18. As her condition deteriorated, doctor referred her to Khulna Medical College and Hospital. She passed away while being taken to the hospital around 1:00am,” said her husband.

Dr Asaduzzaman, medicine specialist at Satkhira Sadar Hospital, said that he had referred Shahnara to Khulna Medical College Hospital after her condition worsened yesterday.

The other deceased, Alamgir, a madrasa student in Jashore, was diagnosed with dengue on August 19 after he was admitted to Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex with fever, said his brother Sujan Gazi.

He was shifted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital as his condition deteriorated, said Dr Sheikh Tayebur Rahman, health official of the upazila health complex.

Alamgir was later admitted to a private hospital in Khulna where he passed away yesterday around 6:00pm, his brother added.

Meanwhile, the number of dengue patients is rising in Satkhira, with 16 new patients being admitted to hospitals in the last 24 hours till this morning, Civil Surgeon Dr Abu Shaheen said.

So far 308 patients have been diagnosed with the disease in the district, he said.  

Of them, 51 are being treated at different hospitals in Satkhira, 40 were shifted elsewhere for better treatment, while 217 returned home after treatment, the civil surgeon added.
