Govt conscious about environment for setting up power plants: Nasrul

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid today said the government is conscious about the environmental impact for setting up power plants in the country.

He made the remarks responding to a query about the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) concern over the proposed Rampal power plant in the country. 

"The government would assess the environmental impact before setting up new plants in the country, as we are very much conscious about environment," the state minister said after a workshop on Cumulative Environmental Impact Assessment Study of Siddirganj Power Hub at Bijoy Hall in the city.

He said the government is very much conscious about the environmental impact for setting up new plants. "We would evaluate about the environmental impact before setting up power plants in the country."he added.

The Power Cell carried out the Cumulative Environmental Impact Assessment (CEIA) Study for Siddirganj Power Hub in collaboration with the World Bank from February 2015 to August 2016.

The government has decided to build a power hub at Siddirganj as because there are some power plants, cement factories, paper mills, re-rolling mills, textile mills, readymade garments, food processing factories, shipbuilding and brick fields in the area, Nasrul said.

He said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working hard to ensure a healthy and livable environment for the next generation.

"Bangladesh would be a developed country as per this government's target," the state minister said. 

Among others, chairman of Bangladesh Energy and Power and Research Council Dr Ahmad Kaikaus, chairman of Power Development Board Khaled Mahmood, director general of Power Cell Engineer Mohammad Hossain and director of World Bank Julia Bucknall were present.
