3 DU teachers express solidarity with students

Three Dhaka University teachers have expressed solidarity with the students, who are on hunger strike since Thursday, demanding rescheduling of city polls as January 30 coincides with Saraswati Puja.

The teachers on Saturday sat with the students on hunger strike at the base of Anti-terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture on the campus around 12pm.

The teachers are Gobinda Mandal of Law department, Nepal Chandra Roy of Mathematics department and Dr Mukul Kumar Baroi of Sculpture department, Faculty of Fine Art.  Nepal Chandra is also a residential teacher of Jagannath Hall.

Dhaka north and south city corporation elections are scheduled to be held on January 30, the date coincides with the day of Saraswati Puja. 

In Hinduism, Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge and learning, and the Puja is held at educational institutions. Polling stations will be set up at different educational institutions in the city during the polls, which, many fear will hamper the Saraswati Puja celebrations.

DU Vice-chancellor Prof M Akhtaruzzaman yesterday (Friday) also expressed solidarity with the protesters and urged the Election Commission to hold the polls on a different date.
