UNO Wahida regains consciousness

Hours after undergoing a complicated surgery this morning, UNO Wahida Khanam Hussain has regained consciousness. She spoke to the physicians and her husband who is also UNO.

Physicians see the substantial development of consciousness as being out of risk.

Earlier, doctors at Dhaka's National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital expressed optimism about UNO Wahida's chances of survival that was subjected to an attempted murder attack Thursday night.

The institute's Professor Dr Badrul Alam said they are going to study her for 72 hours.

On Thursday afternoon she was flown from Rangpur Medical College Hospital to the capital in critical condition.

First admitted to the Joint Military Hospital, Wahida was moved to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital.

Unknown assailants invaded her home at Upazila Parishad Campus about 3 am on Thursday, injuring her and her father Omar Ali who came from Naogaon to visit her, Ghoraghat Police OC Amirul Islam said.

Wahida 's husband Mejbahul Hossain quoted as saying that at night someone broke in through the bathroom ventilator tube. The perpetrator stabbed her in the head with a hammer, before Wahida heard it.
